Mystery At Sykes House

A Tribute to Kilkee

Wed 22nd July 2026

Set back in the mid-1800s, this novella, by Limerick author Maureen Sparling, takes flight following the harrowing tragic disaster of the BRIG “EDMOND” close to Sykes House on the brink of midnight on Tuesday, 19th November 1850.

This evening is the Official Launch, in Kilkee, (aka Limerick by the Sea), of Maureen Sparling’s latest book set in her dearly loved and precious place on our West Clare Coast.

This book is Maureen Sparling’s tribute to Kilkee. She will discuss her inspiration for this novella, together with her many Kilkee memories, and her life and times.

Maureen Sparling is certain to retell the story of how her novel Ten Lamb Chops for a Pound came to be so titled.

She will speak about the roles played by Noel O’Connor, “The Happy Butcher” and John “The Man” Frawley.

A key focus will be her book launch. The story honours those who suffered and died whilst seeking to reach safety on the shore. Intermingled is a fictional account of Nell & Daniel’s love story, their poignant farewell at Limerick Docks, as Nell boarded the Edmond, and subsequently, the significance of a Claddagh Ring.

Later; you will hear more about those tragic days, now 175 years ago, from renowned local historian John Williams, and there will be time for Q & A. The location of the 1850 tragedy is known as Edmond’s Point.
