John O'Brien
John O’Brien is a local history enthusiast for most of his life. A founder member of the Shannon Archaeological and Historical Society in 1976, he has been proactively involved in its activities throughout its fifty years, particularly in the publication of its annual journal, The Other Clare.
After an early career working as a Cost and Management Analyst for multi-national companies, John became self-employed as a professional photographer in 1985, operating a studio in Limerick for almost three decades.
During those years, he also was proprietor of a bookselling business, specialising in out-of-print books, maps and printed ephemera.
O’Brien also published books for private clients, as well as reprinted a number of rare historical books.
John O’Brien has spoken on many historical topics for various heritage groups. He is currently Chairman of Dúchas na Sionna, whose main project is restoring the Hastings Farmhouse, an earthen building within Shannon town.
A man with considerable interest in not only history, but also community and ecological matters, John O’Brien is also an active member of the Shannon Town Community Wetlands Restoration Group.
