The Ralahine Commune

An Irish experiment in socialism in 1831

Wed 26th August 2026

The local landlord, John Scott Vandeleur, was interested in the theories of socialism and made a decision to implement the system on his estate near Newmarket-on-Fergus, Co. Clare.

Vandeleur’s decision was brought about by the increase in agrarian unrest throughout the 1820s, culminating in the murder of his land steward, Daniel Hastings.

What happened at Ralahine became World News!

John O’Brien’s talk will throw some light on this unique episode in Irish history.
