Ireland’s Great Gospel Books

The European Context

Wed 19th August 2026

In the early Middle Ages Ireland produced a number of beautifully illuminated Gospel books, written on vellum in flowing script, with additional, and usually coloured, decoration. There were also simpler copies of the Gospels, and psalters containing the 150 poems from the Book of Psalms, both needed for liturgical use, made in monastic settings, and copied again and again from the Latin texts. The best-known and most profound is the Book of Kells, now housed in the library of Trinity College, Dublin. This is a work of wonderful depth, imagery and colour, produced just before, and during, the Viking invasions.

These books did not exist in isolation, and we have to look to Europe to understand the layout they followed, their models, the sourcing for some of the colours used, and an understanding of the symbolism of certain images and colourings. We can follow as well how the books influenced the art of Gospel books in other places, in Scotland, northern England and in those places of continental Europe where there was Irish influence, through missionaries, refugees and other monastic travellers.

This talk explores some of these avenues for thought, our links across the continent, and the specifically Irish contribution to its art and culture.
