The McMahons

Last inhabitants of Scattery Island

Wed 5th August 2026

A history of the McMahon family, River Pilots who moved from the Loop Head Peninsula to settle on Scattery Island in 1844, following the Salvage of the sailing ship the Windsor Castle.

The McMahon family remained on the Island until 1978 when the last two inhabitants, Bobby and Pattie McMahon, moved to the mainland and settled in Cappa, Kilrush.

This talk will focus on the McMahons’ deep connection with the Sea, their lives on Scattery Island, and their strong connections to Pilotage on the Shannon, Shipping, the Commission of Irish Lights, the Island Post Office and farming the land.

Diarmuid Whelan will use a range of resources such as; historical research, archive material including correspondences between the Commission of Irish Lights and the McMahons, the Scattery Island Lighthouse Log Books, as well as oral tradition and first-hand accounts.

Our speaker sincerely hopes to do justice to this remarkable family, whose name and seafaring tradition extended far from their island home on the Shannon Estuary.
