Kelp Meitheal

A Gathering of Seaweed and Shore People Lat 52.716224 N / Long 9.616049 W

Wed 8th July 2026

This talk documents the six months of physical shorework undertaken by the assembly of a coastal community at Coosheen / Farrihy Bay, County Clare from May to October 2024, reimagining the process and methods used to gather and harvest Seaweed feams /sea rods on the foreshore, the construction of a Kelp drying stand, a Kelp burning pit and the burning of the Kelp as it was done over one hundred years ago as a raw material towards the production of iodine.

This project was funded by Clare County Council’s Creative Ireland fund.

Through storied material and research, written word and field notes, photo captures and field illustrations, microfilms and sound recordings, the talk captures the transformation of the Kelp makers and our watery relations the Seaweed to keep “… the story going for those who come after”.
