Forecasting Ireland’s weather

Michelle will give an insight into the world of weather forecasting at Met Éireann, giving an overview of some of Met Éireann’s forecast products and services.

Met Éireann is the authoritative voice on meteorology in Ireland, its forecasts and warnings feeding into decisions that need to be taken by key stakeholders such as airport authorities, county councils and in extreme weather, the National Emergency Coordination Group.

Michelle will give an anecdotal account of some extreme weather events that she’s been on duty for. She has seen many advances in the science of forecasting over the past two decades and in the communication of forecasts and warnings to the general public and to the relevant stakeholders, which ultimately helps society to protect life and property.

About the speaker

Michelle Dillon

A native of Tullycrine, near Kilrush, in west Clare, Michelle joined Met Éireann in 2005. Then following the completion of a master’s degree in Meteorology in UCD, she took up a meteorologist forecasting position in the Aviation Services Division at Shannon Airport, Co. Clare. She has expanded her role down through the years to include general forecasting as well as aviation forecasting, and has been a TV broadcast meteorologist on RTÉ since 2016.

She loves the variety of her role, relaying the all-important weather forecast information to the general public and to aviation stakeholders and getting to work and live in both Dublin and Clare.
